These are the prototypes that were created along the way to develop the Super Smoker.
- Gunsmoke for scale
- Pump on Gunsmoke bottom to prove concept
- 1" diameter brass smoker (too small)
- 1-1/2" diameter brass smoker (too big & too heavy)
- 1-1/4" diameter aluminum smoker (size is right, but aluminum is no good!)
- 1" diameter Delrin® smoker (too small, but Delrin works great!)
- 1-1/4" diameter Production Super Smoker
Unseen are the several valve/injector combinations that were tried.Small incremental changes have been made to the design to make the smoker better.
- The pump knob was designed to be tight enough that it wouldn't turn by itself when bouncing around in the shooting kit. However, it prooved to be too tight and difficult to turn in some cases. We first fluted the knob so one could get a better grip on it, but realized this wasn't the answer. The solution was to separate the pump from the knob so you would only be pushing the o-ring piston instead of turning it also.
- The knurling on the parts was changed from a bump knurl to a double wheel clamp knurl.
- The o-ring under the jet is now in a pocket in the fire head. This keeps the jet from being overtightened and bulging the o-ring out.
- The spark wheels were made by Ronson for cigarette lighters. These wheels need a real shower of sparks to ignite lighter fluid. However, acetylene is very easily ignited over a wide range of mixtures and our new Compass Lake Engineering spark wheels do the job while using less flint.
